Partners both on and off-stage, Renjith Babu and Vijna Vasudevan are part of new generation of classical Indian dance, pushing the borders of bharatnatyam and elevating the art of the jugalbandi (duet).
Renjith and Vijna exemplify the kalakshetra style of bharathanatyam, with its emphasis on straight lines and exaggerated geometry, yet are influenced by yoga, the martial art kalaripayattu, as well as other dance styles, filling their performances with “brilliant and unexpected choreographical twists” (India Herald) while working within a traditional framework.
Opening the dance programme of Darbar Festival 2018, curated Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Akram Khan, this exciting duo perform an unusual new work by the bharatanatyam and contemporary artist Mavin Khoo. Accompanied by a live orchestra, the pair explore the balance between creation and destruction, and the paired forces of Shiva and Kali.
